Nellaiappar Temple

Nellaiappar Temple, also known as the Nellaiappar and Gandhimathi Amman Temple, is one of the largest and most revered temples in Tamil Nadu, dedicated to Lord Shiva and his consort, Parvati (known here as Gandhimathi Amman). Located in the city of Tirunelveli, this temple is renowned for its impressive Dravidian architecture, reflecting the artistry and craftsmanship of the region. The temple complex spans about 14 acres and features towering gopurams (gateway towers), intricately carved pillars, and a beautiful garden.

One of the temple’s unique attractions is the "Mani Mandapam," which contains a series of musical pillars that produce various musical notes when tapped. The temple also houses a sanctum for Lord Vishnu, reflecting the harmonious integration of Vaishnavism and Shaivism in Tamil Nadu's religious culture. Built by the Pandyas and expanded over centuries by various dynasties, Nellaiappar Temple hosts grand festivals, especially during Maha Shivaratri and the Arudra Darisanam, which attract thousands of devotees each year. The temple is not only a spiritual center but also an architectural marvel, drawing history enthusiasts, art lovers, and pilgrims from across India.
